A Conversation with Tida Lam, DO

“Being open on weekends is the only reason I chose Avance Care for my first doctor’s visit in 17 years. I expected to sit in a crowded lobby, have somebody weigh me, take my blood pressure, and make me sit alone in an exam room for a half hour until the doctor would come in, call me the wrong name, and tell me to lose weight. Dr. Lam and the rest of the staff at Avance Care shattered that image. I felt welcome from the time I walked through the door; did not have to wait; and spent most of my appointment actually talking to kind, caring people. The experience restored my faith in the medical profession, and I can’t speak highly enough of them.”

— Patient Testimonial

Name: Tida Lam, DO

Role at Avance:  Family Medicine Physician

Years at Avance Care: Less than one

My first job: Sears

Why primary care: I chose primary care because of the ability to form lifelong relationships with my patients. I’m also someone who can get bored easily so primary care keeps me on my feet because I see patients of all ages and a variety of disease processes throughout my day.

Why I love Avance Care:  I feel like in this modern age, medicine can feel impersonal and at times “too big” for patients. I love how Avance Care strives to create a small community feel at their clinics. Since I’ve been here, I’ve heard so many patients say that we treat them like family here in the clinic. I’ve always been proud to be a physician but now I’m also extremely proud of the company that I work for because they represent the values that I hold as a physician.

If I wasn’t a primary care provider I would be:  I would be selling smoothies on a beach in Hawaii.

My favorite part of medicine is:  The opportunity to help people.

If someone wanted to start a conversation with me, they should ask me about:  Food!

How I connect to patients:  By asking them about their life, family, career, and/or passions. We are more than our illnesses and organ system so its important that my patients see me as human and I see them beyond a medical diagnosis.

The one piece of medical advice I tell my patients but have a difficult time incorporating into my own life: To cut down on fried chicken because I LOVE fried chicken myself.

If I have a three day weekend, I can be found: With my husband exploring the restaurant scene in North Carolina.

The four people I would invite to my ultimate dinner party: My husband, Keanu Reeves, Dave Chapelle, and Robin Williams. I always love a good laugh.
