Margaret Garehan, LCMHC, CRC, LCAS-A is a Licensed Behavioral & Addiction Therapist and Certified Rehabilitation Counselor with Avance Primary Care serving patients via virtual appointments.

She received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from North Carolina State University and a Master in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine.

Margaret provides mental health and addiction counseling to adults. She has experience working with the following behavioral wellness concerns: anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, perceptual disturbances (i.e. hallucinations), trauma, familial stress, interpersonal stress, adjustment to newly acquired or long-standing disability, suicidality, caregiver fatigue, and substance use. Particular areas of specialty include: Working with LGBTQIA+ populations, non-traditional (Poly/CNM+) relationships, religious trauma, ADHD, Insomnia, and Chronic Pain.

Margaret’s approach to mental health and substance use is typically non-judgmental, informal, and skills-based. Therapeutic modalities include (but are not limited to) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Pain Reprocessing Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.

Margaret grew up in Louisiana but has spent most of her adult life in North Carolina.  Margaret’s personal areas of interest are video games, astronomy, self-care, cooking, and crafts. She has a rescue dog (Nacho) and a cat (Pita) that she spends her free time with.
