Proxy Access in MyChart

Proxy Access in MyChart

In MyChart, you have the ability to view another individual’s (such as a family member’s) information. This is done by the other person granting you “proxy” access. When you have proxy access you will have visibility into most of the other individual’s information except what is considered sensitive information.

At Avance Care, active patients who are 18+ years old will be able to invite people to have proxy access through MyChart.

If you have been given access to a family member’s Avance Care MyChart, you will be able to view their information alongside your information in MyChart.

MyChart Accounts for Teens

When a patient turns 12 years old, certain changes occur automatically in MyChart to comply with North Carolina state law and our commitment to improve the health and protect the privacy and confidentiality of our teen patients. These changes limit the kind of access a parent or guardian has to the child’s health information in MyChart.

While parents/guardians will continue to have access to key information and remain an essential part of the patient’s care team, certain sensitive details may no longer be visible without the patient’s consent.  If the teen wishes the parent to have full access as they did previously, they can request expanded access for their parent or guardian.

Once a child has turned 12 and has their own MyChart, a parent or guardian will need a MyChart proxy account linked to their child to see any information about the child.

What Information Can Parents Access in Teen’s MyChart

The information a parent or guardian has access to in a teen’s MyChart depends on the type of Proxy Access they have. The chart below shows what is accessible in MyChart at the standard, limited proxy access and the expanded access.

How to Grant or Revoke Proxy Access

Adults

An adult can grant or revoke proxy access to someone else from the Sharing Hub inside MyChart. Watch “Sharing Your Record – MyChart Patient Tutorial” video for details. You are also able to make changes to proxy access when visiting an Avance Care location.

Teens

Teens may grant expanded access to their parent or guardian by signing a request in their Avance Care clinic. This will allow the parent/guardian access to all the same information they would have had access to when the child was under 12.

If a teen has granted a parent or guardian expanded access and later wishes to restrict access to some of their medical information (lab results, visit notes, appointment history, medications, etc.) they may revoke the expanded access. To do so they would consult with their Avance Care healthcare provider and have the access level changed at the Avance Care location. Teens are not permitted to grant or revoke proxy access through MyChart.

Signing up for a Teen MyChart

At your next Avance Care appointment you will be provided an activation code to set up your MyChart. You will be able to grant expanded proxy access to your parent or guardian at that same time. You may grant or revoke expanded proxy access at any time by visiting the practice to speak with a member of your care team.
