Sarah Gauger, FNP-BC, is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and board-certified Advanced Diabetes Management practitioner, serving patients’ primary care health needs at Avance Care South Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
She received her undergraduate degree in Biology from Juniata College prior to attending Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, where she earned both her bachelor’s (1998) and master’s (2001) degrees in nursing. Her nursing background is in general medicine, cardiovascular medicine, and cardiothoracic surgery. This experience has solidified her commitment to helping patients lower their overall cardiovascular risk factors, including helping them manage obesity.
Most of her 20+ year nurse practitioner career has been spent in primary care. However, she also spent eight years working for the Division of Endocrinology at Duke University Medical Center, providing advanced diabetes care to inpatients, primarily on the cardiac and cardiothoracic surgery units. This experience further sparked her passion for helping patients understand and achieve good diabetes control. She is especially interested in using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology to help patients.
In addition to direct patient care, Sarah has been teaching and precepting at Duke University School of Nursing since 2007 in its master’s degree program, helping to shape nurses into future colleagues as nurse practitioners. She likes to make sure her students, as well as her patients, understand the “why” behind diseases and treatment recommendations.
Outside of work, Sarah enjoys traveling, hiking, reading, crocheting, and her new passion for working in stained glass as an artistic medium.
