Mustafa Husain, MD is a board-certified Geriatric Psychiatrist providing care at Avance Care Broad Street in Durham, North Carolina.

Dr. Husain earned his medical degree from Dow Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan, and began his training in the United States at Stanford University. He completed his psychiatry residency at the University of Southern California and went on to pursue research and geriatric psychiatry fellowships at Duke University Medical Center.

He brings extensive experience in academic medicine, clinical care, and research, and currently serves as a tenured Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology, and Internal Medicine, as well as Director of the Neuro-Stimulation Research Lab. He has held leadership roles at both the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, NC, including serving as Vice Chair for Faculty Development.

Dr. Husain has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including a contribution on ECT and neurostimulation therapies in Kaplan and Sadock’s Textbook of General Psychiatry. Dr. Husain serves on the editorial board of the Journal of ECT and is a peer reviewer for several major medical journals. His recognitions include the FDA Asian American Accomplishment Award, the NCDEU Young Investigator Award, and the NIMH Summer Research Institute Award.

Dr. Husain’s research focuses on aging, geriatric psychiatry, and innovative treatments for major depressive disorder, including magnetic stimulation therapy, vagus nerve stimulation, and deep brain stimulation. He has served as a grant reviewer for NIMH and the Wellcome Trust and has led multiple federally and foundation-funded studies.
