Susan Catchings, DNP, FNP-C is a Primary Care Provider and board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with Avance Care in Cary, North Carolina.

Susan is also a Doctor of Nursing Practice. She attended Columbia University for her undergraduate degree in nursing and lived in NYC for 8 years working in a hospital as a pediatric nurse. In 1985, she moved to Cary, North Carolina with her husband to raise their family. As her children started school, she worked part-time in a pediatric office setting and at UNC Pediatric Hematology/Oncology taking care of children with cancer and pulmonary disease. It was during this time that she realized that primary care was her passion, so she applied to the UNC-CH Nurse Practitioner program. Because she loves to teach, Susan pursued her Doctorate at Duke University and graduated from this program in 2020. She intends to teach nurse practitioner students at a local University while continuing clinical practice.

Susan graduated with honors in 1993 and started her career. She worked in an HMO setting focusing primarily on pediatrics, but in 2004 she decided to open a family practice. Susan co-owned this family practice and realized her love for taking care of patients of all ages. She is passionate about educating her patients to live the healthiest lives they can. In 2015, she decided to join Avance Care and opened the Cary office.

Susan serves as adjunct faculty for UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing and Duke University School of Nursing. She is also a member of the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing. She had a pediatric consultant role for WRAL-TV for almost 15 years, appearing monthly on the noon news to speak about pediatric health topics. She is passionate about world health and has been on multiple mission trips to Bolivia and China, focusing on caring for orphans and at-risk pregnant women, and teaching families about healthy nutrition. In addition, she regularly hosts visiting Chinese medical students.

Susan married in 1980 to her college sweetheart that she met while studying at Columbia University. They have three adult children and five grandchildren. She was born in Washington State, where much of her extended family lives. She loves to read, travel, sing, and play tennis in her spare time.
