It may seem like we are continually bombarded with confusing messages while on social media and the internet related to political actions, policies, and the like. Sifting through and fact checking all these things can become exhausting.
Although our society at large is greatly impacted by decisions made at the top, we can still do things to feel more in control of our lives. In addition to the obvious steps like protesting, calling your congress person, going to town hall meetings, voting, joining advocacy groups that align with your values, etc., we could also choose to do our very best to engage in the things that make us feel complete as human beings.
Practical Ways to Stay Emotionally Resilient in a Political Climate
Leaning Into Our Hobbies of Interest
We take these things for granted, but tapping into what brings us joy is key when we feel despair or powerlessness. Re-connecting to what we are naturally good at brings a sense of joy, mastery, and empowerment that cannot be taken away from us (music, sports, creative outlets, games, more social “in- person” activities, etc.).
Tune Out Social Media and TV
Taking breaks from the news cycle and going on fun trips, big or small, also goes a long way as it refreshes our minds and can allow for a rebooting. This helps us re-approach our lives with more intention and purpose.
Spending More Time with Loved Ones
Reaching out to our close relatives and friends more regularly can distract us from negative content as well. In these divided times, we sometimes come up against opposing political views. Being able to exercise patience and show kindness will always be on your side, regardless of how challenging it may be to hear our loved ones make statements that are not in line with our own views, values, beliefs, and/or convictions. , can’t control what others perceive or choose to believe, but you can skillfully choose your responses in a way that keeps the emotional temperature down in the room.
Consider Small Acts of Kindness
Making someone’s life just a little better can have a secondary gain of instilling good feelings in us as well. Some ideas for this include volunteering at your local church, offering to pick up food for a neighbor, preparing a meal for someone down on their luck, offering rides to medical appointments, or even helping someone to find shelter, clothing, and/or providing a safer place from the ever growing unpredictable weather conditions.
Some of these things may seem challenging as we ourselves may struggle to make ends meet and take care of our own families, but if we do not stop and take opportunities to care for ourselves, then we can inadvertently become immune to world harshness, socially distant, and may also harbor resentments that wind up not being good for us and those we care about most.
So, I challenge you to try something new and different to break free from the political climate stronghold and actively interrupt the cycle of negativity that dominates our culture at this moment. You are strong, resourceful, and have special gifts! You deserve good things amidst what seems like day-to-day chaos.
Remember that you are always in control, even when it seems like you are not.
You Got This!
