COVID-19 third dose

Updated: August 24, 2021

Avance Care is now offering the third dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to people whose weakened immune systems put them at highest risk of serious and prolonged illnesss.

This offering follows the FDA’s emergency use authorization, which is based on research that found the third vaccine dose offers these patients additional protection against the virus.

To date, the FDA and CDC have not released guidance for supplemental doses (commonly referred to as the “booster dose”) for all individuals. We will share an update with you when it is available. Currently, the FDA and CDC recommend you receive the third dose if you meet these requirements:

  • Are currently receiving cancer treatment for tumors or blood cancers
  • Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress your immune system
  • Received a stem cell transplant in the last two years or are taking medicine to suppress your immune system
  • Are taking high-dose steroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune system
  • Have been diagnosed with a moderate to severe primary immunodeficiency disease (such as DiGeorge syndrome and Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
  • Are living with advanced or untreated HIV infection

COVID-19 Testing

If you have symptoms of COVID-19 or have been exposed to people who have symptoms or have tested positive, you may want to be tested.

Avance Care is offering COVID-19 testing at our locations throughout the Triangle and the Charlotte region.  Talk with your healthcare provider to review your symptoms and place an order for the COVID-19 test.

If you experience the following symptoms, call 911 so you can be transported to the nearest emergency department for evaluation:

  • Extreme difficulty breathing (for example, cannot speak in a full sentence or walk across the room without having to stop to catch your breath)
  • Blue lips, face, or skin
  • Severe chest pain
  • Confusion, new-onset slurred speech, or seizure activity

Types of testing available

Molecular lab test (PCR/NAAT)

The PCR test is the most accurate and reliable test available for COVID-19. The sample collection is done using a swab to collect respiratory material found in your nose. The PCR test can be used for travel, and results are received within 1-2 days.

Rapid antigen testing

The COVID-19 rapid testing can be used for individuals who were recently infected or experiencing symptoms – including fever, cough, difficulty breathing. The rapid antigen test can provide results within the same day. This test is not accurate if you are not experiencing symptoms.

Antibody testing

Avance Care offers the COVID-19 antibody test to determine if you have been infected with COVID-19. Our tests, unlike many in the market, are high-quality and have gone through rigorous testing with the FDA. This test provides results within 24-72 hours.
