A Conversation With Joanne Fruth, MD

Name: Joanne Fruth, MD

Role at Avance:  Medical Director, Avance Care

Years at Avance Care: 2 ½

My first job:  Clinical Instructor, University of Washington School of Medicine – or should I have said “Lifeguard” at the Tiffin, Ohio YMCA?

Why primary care: I thought of all the specialties available and decided I could do the most good for the most people as a family physician.

Why I love Avance Care:  I love the support Avance gives me to practice medicine. I love the focus on putting the patient first in every layer of caring for them.

If I wasn’t a physician I would be:  A college professor doing research in exercise physiology. That’s what I went to graduate school to do, then went back to my first passion: becoming a physician.

My favorite part of medicine is:  Inspiring a patient to change.

If someone wanted to start a conversation with me, they should ask me about: My children.

How I connect to patients: I hope I put patients at ease. I was always terrified about going to the doctor. I hope my patients leave every appointment feeling, “That was a good experience.”

The one piece of medical advice I tell my patients but have a difficult time incorporating into my own life:  Only one glass of wine a day for women, not two.

If I have a three day weekend, I can be found: Sitting beside a lake.

The four people I would invite to my ultimate dinner party: My three adult children and my husband. There would be great conversation, a lot of great memories, and so much laughter.
