Meet Dr. Rhett Brown, Named a Top LGBTQ+ Doctor of 2026

At Avance Care, we believe every patient deserves to feel respected, heard, and supported throughout their healthcare journey. That commitment to compassionate, inclusive care is reflected in the work of Dr. Brown, who was recently recognized as a Top LGBTQ+ Doctor of 2026!

We sat down with Dr. Brown to learn more about what this recognition means, why creating a welcoming environment matters, and how he strives to help every patient feel comfortable, respected, and empowered in their healthcare.

Congratulations on being named a Top LGBTQ+ Doctor of 2026! What was your first reaction when you learned about this recognition?

Excitement and gratitude!

What does this award mean to you personally and professionally?

Given the backlash against the LGBT population recently, to have a national organization recognize the need for affirming care helps restore my faith and trust in American healthcare. Personally, I am grateful for the recognition of doing a job I love.

What do you think this recognition says about the type of care you strive to provide every day?

My practice philosophy is to provide support, guidance, and acceptance to each patient. I hope the award recognizes the impact unconditional acceptance can have in prioritizing good health.

How would you describe your approach to caring for LGBTQ+ patients?

LGBTQ patients are like all patients: they want compassionate, competent healthcare. And, LGBTQ patients are different in having special needs that need to addressed by a knowledgeable provider.

What does creating a welcoming, affirming healthcare experience look like in practice?

It starts with a sign on the front door, All Are Welcome. An educated and trained team that embodies unconditional acceptance and non-judgement. Name tags that list pronouns. Both obvious and subtle clues that this is a safe place.

Why is trust such an important part of the patient-provider relationship?

For all patients, trust is critical. Patients may be sharing information that makes them feel vulnerable and fear judgment. Those concerns may limit the information shared with the physician. We need to hear the ‘whole story.’

What do you hope every patient feels after leaving one of your appointments?

They were seen, heard, and comforted. I want them to feel involved over time together, and not just another name on my schedule.

What advice would you give someone who has been hesitant to establish care with a healthcare provider?

Speak with your friends and get recommendations for a physician or APP. During the first visit, observe if the physician or APP spends time asking about who you are, what is your story, what brings you joy. That provider is building a relationship, not a billable transaction.

What are some of the biggest misconceptions about LGBTQ+ healthcare?

That it is only about STDs.

Are there preventive screenings or conversations that you wish happened more often?

Health is a choice. Our daily lifestyle management habits are the manifestation of that choice. Prioritizing good sleep, good diet, good movement, mindfulness practices, and quality social interaction.

What role does primary care play in supporting both physical and mental well-being for LGBTQ+ patients?

The long-term relationships that allow full, open communication and building of trust. Primary care is the foundation of quality physical and mental health.

How have your patients influenced or inspired you throughout your career?

By living and fighting to live as their authentic selves. If you want to know a brave person, speak with a transgender person living out and proudly.

What inspired you to become a physician?

I have wanted to be a family physician for as long as I can remember. Nothing ever stopped or dampened my vision of doing this work.

What continues to motivate you in medicine today?

My patients and the privilege of providing care.

If someone is looking for a new primary care provider, what do you hope they know about you before they schedule their first appointment?

Don’t leave part of yourself in the car. I want to get to know you, without judgment. You are welcome and safe in my office.
